First Visit
Sywambhunath Temple: Swoyambhunath, stands at the top of the Kathmandu valley, is one of the oldest religious heritage and major tourist attraction in Nepal. This stupa is situated approximately 4 Km west of Kathmandu City. It is made of solid hemisphere of brick and earth supporting a lofty gold plated conical spire capped by a pinnacle. Painted on the four sides of the spire bases are the large eyes of Lord Buddha witnessing the reality and representing compassion and wisdom while the dome of Sutpa represents the entire world. It is situated on a hillock of 77 m high above the level of the Kathmandu valley and has a bird’s eye view of Kathmandu City. The site carries significant importance for the pilgrims and has been listed in UNESCO World Heritage site which in other word also known as ‘Monkey Temple’. The temple has more to offer as a tourist destination than just being a religious destination for the devotees. The surroundings of Stupa consist of the chaityas, temples, painted images of deities, and other paintings which have religious significance. Magnificently carved structures, paintings, view of hundreds of candles burning, heavenly fragrance of the incense develops a magical atmosphere in this religious site.
Second Visit
Boudhanath: Situated 8 km to the east of downtown Kathmandu, Boudhanath, is one of the most imposing landmarks in Kathmandu, visible as soon as you land at the Tribhuvan International Airport. It is the largest stupa in the Kathmandu Valley. The 36-meter-high stupa of Boudhanath is one of the largest stupas in South Asia. With countless monasteries surrounding it, Boudhanath is the center of Tibetan Buddhism in Nepal.
Built in the shape of a mandala designed to replicate the Gyangtse of Tibet, the stupa was renovated by Licchhavi rulers in the 8th century. The location of the stupa is interesting as it once lay on the ancient trade route to Tibet and it was here that Tibetan merchants rested and offered prayers for centuries. On each side are a pair of the all-seeing-eyes of the Buddha symbolizing awareness. The canopy has 13 stages. At ground level there is a brick wall with 147 niches and 108 images of the meditational Buddha inset behind copper prayer wheels.
Third Visit
Pashupatinath Temple is dedicated to the Hindu Lord - Shiva, the God of Destruction, also known as Pashupatinath (Lord of Animals). This temple is, moreover, a final destination for the Hindu devotees of all around the world. Built in around 400 A.D, the temple is located by the holy river Bagmati, decorated within the perfection of ancient arts and crafts. Four of the main gates of the temple are made of silver. Each gate is allocated for the four-faced lingam (phallic symbol of Shiva), which is to express that the blessing of the lord shall spread in all four directions around the world. Pashupatinath Temple is a home for many Hindu Sadhus from all around the world. They are spotted around preference of the temple, with long dreadlock, meditating by the bank of Bagmati river, and occasionally smoking marijuana - as it is believed that Lord Shiva was fond of smoking marijuana in his adobe, Kailash - Sadhus in Pashupatinath are seen impersonating Lord Shiva.
