The hub of the teahouse is the dining room; usually decorated with colourful traditional rugs sometimes with a fire pit or heater (some lodges may charge a fee to put the heater on). Most teahouses sell snacks and other essentials such as tissues, soap and toilet papers. Almost all lodges have electricity, but it is not wholly reliable, and lighting may not be bright enough to read, carrying a torch is essential. Electrical charging facilities are generally available only in the dining room (charged at approx. Rs 150-350 per hour per device). Many of the lodges use solar generated power system so sometimes there may not be enough electricity for produced for all of your devices. Many lodges have Wi-Fi installed these days, but the internet speed may vary with some areas working very well but in other parts slow and temperamental.

FOODS IN NEPAL
In Major Cities of Nepal like- Kathmandu, Pokhara and Chitwan there’s a variety of Choice of all tastes and Budget whereas the menus in the tea houses are Traditional Dhal Bhat and European Cousins. Vegetarians do not need to worry as they are well catered in Nepal. We reckon our Trekkers to put extra care around while choosing the meals around the Trek House. Dhal Bhat is the staple diet in Nepal and comes in many different forms but generally comprises some curried lentil dhal and meat or vegetables, some rice, and a pickle/chutney. Another popular snack is momos; a type of Nepalese dumpling, fried or steamed, filled with meat or vegetables.Although meat is available in the teahouses, we advise against eating it on trek. The meat has often been carried in the heat from lower altitudes for several days before reaching the lodges and can cause stomach upsets or illness. Germs can also be spread by handling dirty money - we recommend using hand sanitiser.
Meals on Trek: Allow approximately US$30-US$40 per day for meals, snacks and drinks in the lodges.
There are many fine restaurants in Kathmandu and Pokhara and you should allow approx. US$15 for lunch and US$20 for dinner. Drinks extra. Nepal caters very well towards vegetarians and vegans with almost all restaurants having a veg section of the menu. If in doubt, please check with your tour leader.
Your tour leader will be able to direct you towards restaurants that are known to have better hygiene, especially in tourist areas where they are travelling with our groups regularly
SOME TIPS THAT WILL HELP YOU STAY WELL WHEN EATING IN NEPAL INCLUDES:
- Stick to Restaurants and street stalls busy with locals - local families eating there are a good bet.
- Wash your hands before eating (most restaurants will have a hand basin or bathroom) or use a Sanitising hand gel
- Give yourself a few days to get used to local food, especially spicy food.
- If in Doubt, Stick to the Veg Meal
- Avoid salads and peel fruit to Avoid eating skin that may be Washed in Local Water
- Steer Clear of ice unless in Higher end Restaurants
- Drink more Chai, Eat More mo-mo's
DRINKING WATER
Staying hydrated is important when undertaking any physical activity but particularly so at altitude where it is generally recommended to drink at least 3-4 litres per person per day. We strongly encourage you not to buy bottled water on trek as this contributes to the growing problem of plastic pollution in Nepal’s trekking areas.
All teahouses will provide cold water free of charge, if requested. Although this should not be drunk untreated, we recommend that you bring a reusable bottle with a wide opening (Nalgene or similar) with you and use a SteriPEN to treat it with. A SteriPEN is a handheld UV water purifier – small, lightweight and battery powered so easy to pack for a trek. In Nepal’s trekking regions most of the bottled water isn’t strictly ‘mineral water’ anyway but is UV treated, so it’s exactly the same technology. It’s quick to use, far more effective than purification tablets, and the water is ready immediately. It’s fine to use a SteriPEN on non-boiled water so long as it isn’t cloudy or full of sediment (which is uncommon in these regions). SteriPENs are widely stocked on Ebay, Amazon, outdoor shops and other online retailers; look for the latest models but avoid USB charging ones. Better still, a SteriPEN will pay for itself over the course of the trek and you won’t leave behind a single plastic bottle – you will end up spending the same or even less than you would on bottled water, plus you can keep it for future trips.
If you prefer not to invest in a SteriPEN, the teahouses also sell boiled water for approx. Rs150-350 per litre (the price increases the higher you trek) which should not require treating. This is also perfect for a bedtime refill as it can double up as a Hot Water Bottle.
